Problems with 8.5.1 client on Ubuntu 9.10

I know this is unsupported, but has anyone succeeded in using Notes 8.5.1 on Ubuntu 9.10?
My install went fine and I can log in to Notes and open servers/applications normally.
However, documents are not rendered.... e.g. when opening a mail I just get a blank window.
